Bend’s river parks, museum, city volcano, and desert cliffs

Follow the Deschutes from Drake Park toward the Old Mill, give the High Desert Museum several hours, see the Cascade horizon from Pilot Butte, or drive north for the cliffs and Crooked River at Smith Rock.

Start with Bend itself: the Deschutes links Drake Park, downtown, Miller’s Landing, and the Old Mill. Ponderosa singletrack spreads west from town, while volcanic cliffs and Cascade snow turn the farther outings into distinct day trips.

Walk the river from downtown toward the Old Mill

Begin where downtown meets Drake Park, follow the river south past Miller’s Landing, and continue toward the Old Mill as time allows. Footbridges, ponderosa shade, lawns, and basalt-lined water give the route several natural turnarounds, with coffee and meals at either end.

The cinder cone rises from the east side of the city, revealing downtown, the Deschutes corridor, the dry plateau, and the Cascade chain from a single summit. It fits into a morning or evening without consuming the day needed for a forest or mountain outing.

The cliffs and Crooked River sit north of Bend near Terrebonne. Go for hiking, climbing scenery, or a purposeful day trip—not as a casual add-on after Mt. Bachelor. Check Oregon State Parks alerts, carry water, and expect exposed sun.

Late morning · High Desert Museum

Give the wildlife, history, Indigenous culture, and outdoor exhibits several hours. The museum explains the landscape seen from nearly every later stop.

Midafternoon · Drake Park to Old Mill

Return to town for the Deschutes route through Miller’s Landing. Stop at the Old Mill for coffee or an early meal, or walk back toward downtown.

Evening · Pilot Butte

Use the cinder-cone summit for the wide view: Bend below, dry plateau to the east, and the Cascade line turning pink beyond town.

Make Smith Rock a separate day. Its Crooked River bends, sheer walls, climbers, and exposed desert paths reward an early drive to Terrebonne and enough time to stay through changing light rather than squeezing the park between Bend stops.
